Welcome to Mystic Messages, a cool graffiti wall for your Galacticomm
Worldgroup BBS system.
1) Setting up Mystic Messages
A) Unzip the MMESS*.ZIP archive into a temporary directory.
Place MPS*.* from the archive into your \WGSERV directory (or
the directory in which the MAJORBBS.EXE and related files reside).
B) Use the CNF editor in Worldgroup to modify any Mystic Messages
settings, such as profanity allowance yes/no, and wall direction
forward or backward. You may also use the security CNF to modify
the key required to erase the wall and read writer's names. The
key defaults as "SYSOP."
C) If you are installing as an upgrade, be sure to make note of the
values of your MPSWALL CNF options *BEFORE* you copy the archive
as described in step A. Future versions may add new CNF options,
text or ANSI's may change, and so on, so a new copy of the .MCV
and .MSG file(s) will always be included, meaning your CNF
options will be overwritten with the defaults. Be sure to change
them back (if you are not using the defaults) after each upgrade.
D) Use the menu tree editor to add "Mystic Messages" to your BBS.
2) CNF options
A) Security Access
i. NAMEKEY: Security CNF option
Key required to access the "Read Wall with names" option. The
default is SYSOP. If you don't want the wall to be anonymous, you
may select a key which every user has.
ii. RESETKEY: Security CNF option
Key required to erase the Mystic Messages wall. The default is
SYSOP and should only be changed when you want to allow others
the ability to erase the wall. (Not recommended for everybody
to have).
iii. LOCKOUT: Security CNF option
This allows you to define a key, which when obtained by a user,
actually prevents that user from using Mystic Messages. You
should never blank this out, otherwise no user could use the
module. This option should be used for "locking-out" users.
B) Configuration options
i. ALLOWOBS: (Allow obscene message YES/NO) Configuration CNF option
This option will determine if "obscene" messages (messages with
obscene words) may be added to the wall. The default is NO.
ii. BACKWARD: (Show wall backward YES/NO) Configuration CNF option
This option will determine if the wall is displayed backward,
meaning the most recent messages are shown at the top, with the
first messages being at the bottom. The default is NO (the wall
will add new lines at the bottom).
iii. ALLOWCOL: (Allow users the use of GLOBAL colors? YES/NO)
This option, when set to YES (the default) will allow colors to
be used virtually anywhere -- global pages, teleconference text,
and so on are all candidates for colors! Nothing special must be
done, just key in text using color codes. It's that simple. :)
If global colors produce undesired results, you can always
disable them by setting this CNF option to NO.
Note: Many add-on modules may already harness globals and prevent
the Mystic Messages color globals from operating. For instance, in
the base worldgroup configuration, colors will work in user pages.
Some add-on globals, however, may prevent the colors from parsing,
even in user pages.
iv. ALLOWEXT: (Allow users the use of EXPERT colors? YES/NO)
Mystic Messages also supports color-changes to the background,
as well as flashing. This is not readily mentioned to users
however because too much of a "good thing" can be very annoying.
If you have a problem with too much use of flashing colors and
colored backgrounds, you may set ALLOWEXT no NO to force any
messages to only allow the standard foreground color changes.
C) Text Block configuration options
It is not recommended that you modify the Mystic Messages text,
except as needed for simple BBS customization. Keep in mind that
each new upgrade will undo your changes.
3) Mystic Messages Menu features
A) (R)ead the wall
The "R" command will read what is currently on the wall.
B) (W)rite on the wall
The "W" command will write a message to the wall. You will be asked
if you really want to add the line (at which time you can re-read it
for accuracy). If the ALLOWOBS CNF option is set to NO, the text will
also be checked for obscene words.
C) (A)bout the wall
The "A" command will display information about the wall & its authors.
D) (I)nformation
The "I" command will list some instructions for the wall, as well as
an explanation of the color codes users may enter in their text.
E) (X)Exit from the wall
This "X" command, as with any other "X" in Worldgroup, will return you
to the parent menu (leave Mystic Messages and return to the BBS).
F) (RN) Read with names
The "RN" command will read the wall, showing the names of the author
of each messages. Note, the "RN" command is only available to holders
of the key pointed to by CNF option NAMEKEY (default is SYSOP).
G) (CL) Erase the wall
The "CL" command will erase the wall and start over with a blank slate.
Note, the "CL" command is only available to holders of the key pointed
to by CNF option RESETKEY (default is SYSOP).
H) (ER) Erase Message ###
The "ER" option allows you to erase a single message from the wall
without wiping out the entire wall. You must also have access to
the "RN" feature to know which message # to erase (otherwise you'd
have to guess). The format would be "ER 5" to erase #5, for example.
This feature is only available to holders of the RESETKEY pointer.
4) Mystic Messages color codes
A) About colors:
Mystic Messages has been designed to allow users more freedom with their
choices of colors when writing messages. For example, any part of the
line can be configured with any of 15 different colors to give each
line of text a personal, and somewhat emotional context.
Users can learn the use of colors by referencing a chart under the
(I)nfo menu item, and again with a quick-reference line at the time
of writing a new message.
B) Using colors:
A two-character color code can be entered anywhere in the message, and
as many color changes may be made as space allows. For instance, the
line "`2This is `%a really `!cool `4wall `5even if I *did* write it"
is a valid color-coded line.
C) Color Code chart:
i. FOREGROUND COLORS (standard)
`1 = Blue `6 = Brown `! = Light Cyan
`2 = Green `7 = Light Gray `@ = Light Red
`3 = Cyan `8 = Dark Gray `# = Light Magenta
`4 = Red `9 = Light Blue `$ = Yellow
`5 = Magenta `0 = Light Green `% = White
ii. BACKGROUND COLORS (expert, requires ALLOWEXT to be YES)
`a = Blue `e = Magenta
`b = Green `f = Brown
`c = Cyan `g = Gray
`d = Red `h = Black
iii. FLASHING COLORS (expert, requires ALLOWEXT to be YES)
For flashing colors, use two backwards apostrophes. `` will
turn flashing on. Another `` will turn flashing off. As
example --> This is normal, ``this is flashing, ``this isn't.
The foreground & background colors are retained as well.
D) Global Colors:
If the CNF option "ALLOWCOL" is set to YES, then users can use colors
in their messages... global pages, global actions, teleconference
pages and actions. Colors are used exactly as explained above, and
there is no need to begin the line with anything special. Just insert
color in your text where you want it!
Note: Some add-on options may prevent colors from working in some
areas, most often the user pages and some global add-ons. In fact,
if your BBS has a lot of globals, they may be written in a manner
that prevents Mystic Messages global colors from operating at all.
E) Examples:
Try some of these on the wall for testing:
`$T`6his `$i`6s `$a R`6eally `$C`6ool `$W`6all!
`8`gMystic Messages, by `%Wyndo `8and `%Akiss`8... it `%``ROCKS!
`$`dRED BOX`h `!`1BLUE BOX
Colors are pretty easy when you learn how to use them! :)
5) Comments, suggestions, or just a plain "thank you"
Mystic Messages is freeware. That's right. You may use it on your BBS
but you are not required to pay for it. What a deal, right! :) Many of
my future projects will not be freeware, however this one is.
If you have comments or suggestions or just wanna say hi, or thank you,
you may write me email at wyndo@chaos.connect-bbs.com. If you log onto
connections, say hi to me. I'm "wyndo" online. (Note, I am NOT the sysop
of CONNECTions nor do I have any sort of sysop access. I am a mere user,
so when reporting bugs and such, be sure to write to "wyndo"). You may
call CONNECTions at 316-682-7346 or telnet in to chaos.connect-bbs.com.
Also, visit my web site: http://amber.connect-bbs.com/wyndo for the
latest versions, news, and so on. This site houses my normal BBS doors
(non-worldgroup) as well as this and any future Worldgroup creations.
6) Disclaimer
I have developed and tested this software on a test board as well as
a live board with multiple users. I have taken steps to see that this
software does not cause "side-effects" to the operation of the BBS, or
create any unwanted conditions.
However...
The authors of this software will not take liability for any claims that
it has produced any undesired affects. If you install it and use it, you
agree to assume all responsibility for its operation and performance.
The only guarantee we make is that Mystic Messages will occupy space on
a disk. Furthermore, any distributors of this software, as long as the
software is distributed in its original form (as released from N-E-Ware
with no modifications to the archive or any files therein), cannot be
held responsible for any damages or claims of damage resulting from its
use in unmodified form. Specifically, CONNECTions BBS and its staff
take no responsibility in the results of installing and and/or using this
software package. In short, it works for us -- we hope it works for you.
If it doesn't, we will not be held liable.
7) Thanks & Recognition
Thanks to the staff of CONNECTions BBS, Wichita Kansas, for providing the
opportunity for me to begin developing for the Worldgroup BBS platform,
and providing a thriving BBS on which to test and distribute my software.
Thanks to Anna Kasl-Kissinger, my partner in developing Mystic Messages.
